Swish Swimming: Mermaiding with Mahina Mermaid Merfin

Hi, my awesome merfolks and peeps! I'm back with a mermaid related post once again! This time round, I'll be touching on my mermaiding journey so far and this interesting monofin I recently got my feet into.

If you have been following me on Instagram, you would know that I've been to Tioman recently with my fellow mersisters to hone our mermaid skills by learning freediving! We wanted to improve our breath hold for mermaiding and lots of the experienced mermaids advised us on learning freediving for it. And just to clarify, freediving is a form of underwater diving that relies on divers' ability to hold their breath until resurfacing rather than on the use of a breathing apparatus such as scuba gear.

It is really interesting because it requires lots of mind over matter moments to pass through that urge to breathe before the sensation gets comfortable or in my case, the need to breath is not on my mind. Diving down 16 metres in a single breath was also very exciting and it helped me in understanding the fundamentals of how to dive deep for my future snorkelling experience without the discomfort in my ear and trouble I was facing with my breath hold. That being said, my breath hold is about 2 minutes max so I will need to keep working on it to improve.

Whatever time we had, we spent it by the beach or in the open waters and on the day when our class was later in the day, we rented a paddle board and headed out to be a mermaid!

For this trip out into the sea, I brought along my Mahina Mermaid MerFin! I was introduced to this unique product from my fellow mersisters and on thing led to another and I was talking to the Singapore distributor about it! Made with recycled rubber, Mahina Mermaid Merfins are one of the first eco-friendly/recycled fins produced.

I love how the MerFin moves underwater and how easy it is to carry around. Made with a single model, the Merfin is easy to wear and safe to use because with a quick flick of the ankle strap and the legs are free. I think this is great for beginners or inexperienced merfolks!

A few things to take note before you decide on being a mermaid:

1) You must be able to tread water and also be comfortable floating on the water surface
Floating helps in conserving energy and in gaining back the energy to swim.

2) You must be able to swim
I think this is a given. Haha

3) Never do it alone, always swim with a group of people and have them know that you will be mermaiding.
This is to create a safe and secure environment to swim in, so that if you need any help, there is one available.

One Raffles Place
Find Your Eco-Style

This May, One Raffles Place (ORP) Shopping Mall launched the first ever Great Green Sale to encourage people to shop with a spirit of environmental awareness. With the theme, Find your Eco-style, ORP introduced a range of exciting eco-friendly workshops and exhibitions designed to inspire shoppers to make a stand for the environment. ORP partnered with local artist and tenants to come up with specially curated activities for shoppers. One of the workshop that caught my eye was their T-shirt Scarf Workshop (4,11 & 18 June, 3pm) All shoppers have to do was to spend $280 to qualify for registration and bring along an old T-shirt for the workshop.

And that concludes all that happened for May & the first part of June!
Til the next What Happened post.

Jodulu The Mermaid: The Beginning

I guess it's no secret now that I'm part of the Singapore mermaid pod with all of my Instagram posts... but prior to the start, I was honestly a little apprehensive about sharing the fact that I'm a mermaid.

However, the environment in the school has been very receptive and encouraging in embracing our uniqueness and I guess that opened me up.

I started swimming as a mermaid in March and it has been one of the best decision I made. I got to swim in the ocean with both my legs and my tail, both very different experience. But mostly importantly, it's through this experience instead that I learned to express my childhood dreams.

If you think about it, as a child, we were very opened and full of wonder. I recalled my primary school days where I shared a common interest in mermaids with a fellow classmate who is a boy. Sure, some made fun of him calling him names for having an interest in something "feminine" but the encouraging thing was that he didn't care. He continued drawing his mermaids on paper and talk about being a mermaid.

We were allowed to dream of the possibilities.
Fast forward the years, when adult world slams on your face, most of us tend to lose that side of us... I'm glad I went ahead and did when the inner kid in me always wanted to do.

Of course, it was done with the understanding that I'm not a real biological mermaid.
I'm fully aware that I can drown, and mermaiding is an interest that requires skill sets and practice.

I enrolled in The Singapore Mermaid School and start out in shallow waters with my tail first where I could still stand if I needed to. Please take note of this as you are starting out without a mer-teacher, because, in this community itself, we have heard and read enough of news of people drowning while in a tail.

In fact, I only went into deeper waters once I was confident enough that I can handle not being able to plant my feet down and it was such an experience! I got to swim with a school of sardines~ and well~ experience the full mermaid experience.

It is also through this learning journey of being a mermaid that I got to meet a pod-ful of mersisters who make it easy for me to stretch my tail out from time to time because once you are a mermaid...
You are never going back to being human. Haha!

It also helps to be in a pod while swimming because then, it's not as weird and there is someone around who understands the danger and will keep an eye out always to ensure that safety is in place.

I've got to run now... but for now, feel free to check out the video that I made for the start of my journey!

There will be more to come!
Do let me know in the comments section if you have any question abut being a mermaid etc!
I'll be more than happy to help!
