It's been so long since I last wrote about a movie, and I have to write about this film that I just saw:

I knew that I would love this film the moment after I saw the trailer, and I'm so glad that it didn't disappoint. It was a feast to my eyes with the landscapes, art, interior, fashion, makeup and hair. The 1920s was such a good era! 

Love the high collar~

But what blown me away the most was the performance of Eddie Redmayne, can a guy be any more beautiful and elegant as him! You really got to watch the movie to understand this; he portrayed the character so well that it really got me curious about the real Einar Wegener/ Lili Elbe as a transgender pioneer.

So I spent my Christmas searching for the books and even Gerda Wegener's paintings, which are so cheeky and divine by the way! I love everything about her works!

To me, this film was more than just a man who realised his true identity and the internal struggles that he had in his mind and his relationship with his wife... it is about life, the struggles of living and the battle we overcome to make sense of what life means to us individually. For Lili, being a woman is her life's goal; for Gerda, I felt like it was her paintings and a tad bit of seeing her husband's wishes fulfilled. Overall, the film only showed  me a glimpse of the story behind Lili but it made me a whole lot more curious about their works as a painter and the life journey of the characters.

In light of International Women's Day, I would like to talk about something a little more intimate for us as females...

A year ago, I only knew about 2 types of products to use during menstruation. It was either a tampon or a sanitary pad. I stayed mostly away from tampon unless I have to because:

a) it was freaky to use

b) I sooo do not want toxic shock syndrome.

So for most of my menstrual cycles, I stick to the good old sanitary pad. But they also have their own set of issues:

a) leakage

b) pad rash due to the humidity in Singapore.

Then, on one random day, I saw a video on menstrual cup and it got me curious.

So what's this cup all about?

A menstrual cup is type of feminine hygiene product which is usually made of medical grade silicone, shaped like a bell and is flexible. It is worn inside the vagina during menstruation for about half a day or overnight to catch menstrual fluid (blood).

They vary in shape and designs. Some are slimmer and longer, others are shorter and rounder. They also come with different stem styles.

First Usage Experience

So as I embarked on my journey with menstrual cups, there were lots of concerns and knowledge gaps with the usage and safety of it. Coming from an Asian culture, we were brought up to use pads because:

a) It's just weird sticking things up the who-ha

b) You might get infections from such products

c) It's a big thing when it comes to anything and everything that might affect our virginity.

In a way, I feel like I'm embarking on a quest against this social stigma... which is kind of challenging and scary at the same time. So, ladies~ if you have been considering to switch to these menstrual cups, it would be my honor to lead you down this path.

Here's some of the questions that arise during my first experience:

How to wear it?

Ok, I'm going to be honest now. Insertion is going to be one of the biggest challenge. It took me awhile to overcome the "inconceivable" reality of how this cup was going to be inserted and how it would remain in me for a period of time. So I did what anyone of this age would do, I researched online for the way to fold the cup and on roughly how it should fit in me.

Here are the best 3 folds that I used:

This fold is the most common and most recommended, all you have to do is to fold the cup in half. I find that out of all the folds, this is the easiest to hold for insertion. You will need to relax the muscles to insert this as the circumference is bigger than a tampon but with repetition, the insertion would be easier. 

I find that this fold would work great if you are new to using the cups because it creates a smaller circumference than the C/U Fold. However, it's slightly harder to secure and hold during insertion, especially if your hands are wet. Some cups may not be able to pop open properly with this fold. So my advice for this fold is to experiment with your cup to test how well it pops open with different folds.

If your cup doesn't pop out as well with the Punch Down Fold, you may want to try it with this fold instead. It creates an even smaller circumference for insertion but as with the Punch Down Fold, mid insertion may be challenging as both folds result in an even bigger circumference than C/U Fold towards the base.

I would say that it would be pretty much like inserting a tampon emotionally and mentally, but physically, it takes more practice and experimentation to find the best type of fold for you. Personally, after trying various folds, I find myself using the C/U Fold more often than any. If you have difficulties, feel free to try wetting it with very warm water. For me, mentally, it helps to be able to feel the cup during insertion and the warmth of it helps me to relax for the insertion... just make sure that it's not too hot that you end up burning your sensitive whoo-ha!

Do read up if the brand of cup you are using is compatible with lubricants, because as far as I know, most aren't. Water works best.

How deep should it go?

So after insertion, the next issue I had was knowing if I pushed it "deep" enough for it to be secured.

To be honest, I have yet to figure this out to give you a definite answer. I still end up leaking a little. That being siad, I usually just push it in until I can't feel the "body of it" (ie. the cup), pretty much the same with a tampon, but with the end of the stem leveled with my vaginal opening.

The most uncomfortable portion of the cup is the stem, especially if the steam is a ring. But the solution to that is simple, just ensure that the ring loop is parallel to the lips of your labia.

How to remove?

Removal isn't as difficult as inserting it in, but I find removal the most challenging when the cup moved higher up because that require me to "dig" for the stem to remove. This usually occurs when I sleep with it, because of all the movement in my sleep.

Once you locate the stem, all that is needed is just a little wiggle to remove it. There is a slight suction sensation upon removal but nothing too alarming, just be prepared for it and the menstrual fluid.

Cleaning it is the easiest, simply empty the menstrual fluid (blood) into the toilet and wash it with mild soap before reinsertion. So far, I have yet to spill any blood during removal, so I think that's something that you most likely do not have to worry about as long as you remove it properly.

So, then here's the question:

Are menstrual cups really better than pads and tampons?

Here are 7 reasons why I think that they are better:

1) Cut down on waste

Depending on the brand, they can last for a decade but most of them recommend changing them annually. I did the calculation, on the assumption that you use a minimum of 2 pads per day for a menstrual cycle of 7 days, that will equate to 168 pads a year. 

Imagine how much waste we can cut down by just using 1 cup!
And dont get me started on the ecological footprint of cotton vs. silicone production:

2) No fuss over depleted stock of pads/ tampons

Now, because all you need is 1 cup. You no longer have to go out to buy more or worry that you don't have enough for your next period! This is great if you are always short of shopping time.

3) It is a "Cleaner" product

Not many of you may be aware, but most sanitary pads and tampons are made with bleached rayon, cotton and plastics that may contain some very nasty chemicals.

To produce Rayon, the chemical procedures includes carbon disulphide, sulfuric acid, chlorine and caustic soda. Side effects from exposure to too much Rayon can include: nausea, vomiting, chest pain, headaches and many others.

While pristine-white tampons and pads are created via bleaching that uses chlorine, which results in the production of dioxin that is linked to breast cancer, endometriosis, immune system suppression and various other ailments.

4) No more rashes

Now, like I mentioned~ I'm a user of pads rather than tampons. In a climate like Singapore, where it is hot and humid, it is not uncommon for me to develop rashes from the humidity and chafing from the material. This doesn't happen when I use the cup.

5) No more discomfort during sleep

I find that like a tampon, there is no discomfort while the cup is in place. Most of the time, I end up forgetting that I'm on my period! I also find myself sleeping better because unlike tampons, I can leave the cup in overnight and unlike sanitary pads, there is no stuffiness!

6) You get to know your body better

Now, I know this may seem like a weak reason~ but it is actually one of the best reasons.

Before using cups, I was hell afraid of even inserting a finger into my who-ha to the point that I don't use tampons unless I really really have to. Now, I find myself more comfortable with my own body and I find it very enlightening to know how much I am really bleeding.

Because, before using cups, I always describe my flow as "bleeding like someone stabbed me/ there's a murder scene in my pants". Now, I can tell you roughly how much I really bleed... which is still quite a lot, and yes~ I'm seeing a doctor for it. In fact, I just did my PAP smear. Have you done yours?

7) It really is cleaner to use

Tampons leave a dangling string that gets soaked with pee and pad leaves a bloody mess all over. With cups, it's way cleaner because the stem doesn't soak up anything and because it collects the menstrual fluid inside, so there is no bloody mess!

Now, with all these positive reasons~ I find that it is not a holistic overview without some contrast. So, here's 5 reasons why you may need to think twice before switching or using menstrual cups:

1) You may tear your hymen

As an Asian, I understand that our virginity is very important and the age old tradition of telling if you are a virgin involves your hymen which is why we are advised to stay away from tampons (Read here for facts on Hymen). 

That being said~ If you are a virgin, it is still safe to use menstrual cups, however you should be aware that the hymen may break during the insertion or removal of the cup.

2) You may still contract infections

As with all sanitary products, the chances of infection is highly dependent on personal hygiene. Always wash your hands before insertion and removal, and always wash your cup thoroughly and properly.

3) You need to be mindful of your kitchenware

Now, talking about hygiene, you are advised to boil the cup before and after each cycle to ensure that it is properly disinfected. Boiling it would require your own personal pot to disinfect it properly. I strongly advice you to keep this pot away from the kitchen and to label it properly, because no one wants to eat out from a pot used for this purpose right?

You may also choose to disinfect it by soaking it in a solution of 1 part of vinegar to 3 parts of water for 5 minutes instead. I find this method more discreet.

4) There is a huge learning curve

Compared to pad and tampon, the learning curve to understand how to use the cup properly is huge. It is recommended to give yourself 3-5 cycles to fully understand how to use the cup.

5) Leakages are still possible

In my learning process so far, I find that there are moments when leakages occurs (mostly during the day and right after insertion). So at the present stage, I use pantyliners along with the cup.

So in conclusion, I would say that menstrual cups are really better. Sure, there is a huge learning curve, and I will need my own pot for disinfecting the cups~ but I think the pros outweigh the cons.

Personally, I decided to switch to menstrual cups because I tend to get rashes from the use of pads and, because the amount of wastage created bugs me.

At the age of 25, I am secure in myself to know my own worth and somewhat wise to know that my self-value is not solely tied to my virginity or to an intact hymen.

And lastly, I think cups are really the safer and healthier choice when used properly.

I leave  it to you to decide on your own.

The Good?

1) Something New and Interesting

I said it once, I will say it again~

New attractions are a must to go!

Trick Eye Museum opens all year round from 10am to 9pm, and it takes about 1.5hours to go through the whole museum.

Do take note of the New Queue System for weekends & public holidays here!

2) Fun and Creative

The more creative you are with the poses, the more fun you will have~

We were goofing around a lot, it's not hard to enjoy our time at the museum.

3) Illusions Are More Appealing To Try Out

When I was at Alive Museum, I skipped quite a few illusions because it didn't appeal much to me (Read about my Alive experience here). However, at Trick Eye Museum I would say that I tried out most of them with my brother and boyfriend.

The Bad?

1) Photo Point Icons

There are these icons on the floors throughout the museums that indicates the best spot to stand to capture the illusion of the masterpieces but I found that they were rather "off" for me to capture what I want with an iPhone.

In the end, I had to just neglect the icon and work out the best angle myself.

2) Location

It is quite a hassle to get to Sentosa and there is also that extra charge ($4 if you take the tram) to pass the gantry. We walked in, so it was only $1 (still manageable) and Museum from the gantry than from the Tram Station.

3) Obvious "Stand Here" Placement

Ok, this is a minor factor... But I was very annoyed that I was too tall to stand where as indicated and I find that it gives the illusion away. There are guiding illusion on the side of most artworks, I think the footprint indication should be removed.

4) Place For Bags

I would like to be able to go around the museum without carrying my bags along and placing them aside each time I want to take a photo with the artwork. It would be nice if there was a Baggage system as part of the service in Trick Eye Museum to make the experience more enjoyable for visitors.

And that's all from me in regards to Trick Eye Museum, this time round, I went with my brother and boyfriend. So, I guess it was much more enjoyable and easier for us to take photos of each artwork without asking others for help. It most certainly helped that we entered close to closing hours on a weekday, as I heard that the peak hours queue and crowd can dampen the experience.

STEPS

1) Prepare your essentials

You will need:

Lacquer Remover

Here, I am using Sparitual Fluent Extra Strength Conditioning Lacquer Remover because it is a gentle, vegan, and chemical-free way to remove all traces of nail lacquer without harming you or your nails!

Aluminium Foils

You dont need a big piece for this, just enough to wrap around your fingers and thumbs twice and to fold it to secure. Mine is about 8cm by 4cm. I use only one piece of foil for my hands, removing the polish one finger at a time so that it is less wasteful :) 

Cotton Wool/ Pad

You dont need a lot for this too, just a small thin layer to cover the surface area of your nails.

Simply cut the cotton pad into size.

2) Soak cotton wool/pad with lacquer remover and position it over your nail

3) Wrap soaked cotton wool/pad and finger/thumb with a piece of aluminium foil

4) Secure the wrap by folding in the top, ensure that the foil is tight around your finger/thumb.

The idea here is to wrap the soaked cotton wool/pad and allow the remover to "work its magic" more effectively, hence the term "soak off".

5) After 1-2 minutes, remove foil and gently wipe off the polish. It should come off easily.

It is normal to feel a warming sensation on the tips of your finger/thumb, it is the remover at work.

Hence, I recommend using a gentle remover like the one that I use to prevent over-damaging your nails.

6) If there are residual polish, use another cotton wool/pad to remove excess and you are done!

Note: For the removal of soft gel, step 6 will be different.

Soft gel polish will flake off and requires manual gentle scrapping and slight buffing for removal.

I personally prefer removing my nail polishes off this way because it is less wasteful and more effective!

If I were to remove my glitter polishes off the conventional way, it would have taken me FOREVER and a lot of remover plus cotton wool/pad!

Not to mention the glitter mess!

Last week was a really intense week with prep work for Avelife's Colour Splash Fun Bin Award Ceremony.

The team went through 6000 over entries to select the top 55 for our panel of judges to make the tougher decision of the winners!!!

It was a busy busy period even on Friday night which we were all up in the office adding the finishing touches,  and I was still editing the script for my awesome emcees :)

Then Saturday came and with only a few hours of sleep, we got ready and the entire ceremony started.

The turn out was great and I also had the opportunity to set up a little booth for Recycling Monster!

It was really awesome that the children were all very excited and the parents were also very involved in the process!

And once they were done, they went around holding their monsters up proudly~

So adorable!!!

All in all, I felt like a proud mum~ 

My emcees were awesome and professional even with less than 24 hours of rehearsal!

Then I had to rush down to Singapore Blog Awards Ceremony organised by OMY.SG at Scape*

Hence my crazy hair... Hahaha!

The dress code for the event was Derby or Fashion relating to Horses~

In light of the controversy that was brought up by Xiaxue and reading this review here, I would like to be in the bandwagon of realigning brand's/ company's expectations of a blogger review.

So, here are the 4 things I think you should expect when you engage us for reviews!

1) We don't sell our "soul" for the products/ services

Yes, for us to review about your products/ services~ We have to give it a try and put it to the test and you have to send us the products or offer the services to us.

While I am grateful that most of these products/ services are sponsored for my review, I wont write false truth of my personal experience just because it is sponsored. Basically, dont expect a good review just because it is "free" to us.

This bring me to my next point...

2) We write for our readers

As a reviewer, it falls on our responsibility and integrity to write the truth.

If it really does work wonders, I will write it as so.

If it really doesnt work, I will write it as such.

If it really has not effect, I will state it as it is.

Ultimately,our readers will make their own decision and try the products/ services out by themselves based on what they read from our reviews~ I dont want to lead my readers into a false sense of what works when it honestly doesnt.

As a consumer, you wont want to read lies too.

3) We are entitled to write based on our experiences and opinions

Doing reviews is always a risk bloggers have to take, it is great if things work out well~

However, the flip side of things is that we are being "used" as guinea pigs in a way... testing out things for your target market and our readers.

I have done reviews where I had a really bad reaction to it, broke out into rashes and I wrote my review as it is. I informed the company of the reactions I had and gave them the choice. They didnt want me to post the review but took note of my experience with their product and in a way, I noticed that they didnt push their marketing on that product but focused in others instead.

Our honesty in reviews does work into your advantage if your products/ services are really as good as your marketing claim. It is all about Word-Of-Mouth when it comes to products/ services, and it's a world where people read up on reviews and feedback from others now before deciding on their purchase.

So, dont fault us for our honesty in our reviews~ instead, use our feedback to improve.

Trust me when I say, I wish all products/ services works as claimed. It makes it easier to write and happier too, knowing that something really works for me. It's like hitting jackpot!

Plus~ it's always great when I dont end up with rashes or other weird reactions...

4) Reviewing takes time

I never like rushing my reviews, especially when it comes to skincare because, the effectiveness of such products/ services takes time and to see visible results. So, it would be nice if the timeline for us to write out the review be realistic as well!

What Sort Of Illusions Are There?

Trick Art

Trick Art was very popular in Baroque era in 16th Century. Using 3D painting techniques, these art pieces trick your eyes and stimulate your mind into seeing both illusion and reality at the same time.

I like trick art, it requires a little more effort to see the art. And for some like the dragon one below, I used my phone camera to see discover the illusion of it.

Digital Art

My favourite digital art would be the famed image of Marilyn Monroe keeping her skirt down that is cause by the updraft that is a reason of us blowing a windmill which sets off a series of other windmills in motion to the frame (You can video my instavideo of it here).

Couples, Friends, OR Families

I was there with a friend but ideally, I would think that it would be better to have 3 or more people so that it is easier for photo taking and more fun! 

When I was there, there was a family of 5 (Parents, children & grandma) that went around being silly and creative and they had such a fun time bonding that it warms my heart.

The Good?

1) Something New and Interesting

As we all know, there isnt really much to do in Singapore once you have lived here your whole life...

Alive Museum opens daily from 10am to 10pm (you can still head down after work), and takes about 1.5hours to go through the whole museum.

2) Something Fun and Creative

Kudos to making museums fun and making it a place that inspires creativity to enhance the experience!

3) Photo Point Icons

There are these pink photo point icons on the floors throughout the museums that indicates the best spot to stand to capture the illusion of the masterpieces and I found them extremely helpful!

4) Good Location

Now now, I must also credit that it is a good location for the museum to be located at Suntec City where you can still dine and shop afterwards or before (depending on your timing)!

The Bad?

1) One-Time Experience

I asked my friend what he thought of the place considering that museums and art are also his thing, and he thought that while it was interesting and fun... He wouldnt be going back again any time soon.

In my words, it feels like a "One-Time Experience". 

Personally, even though I know that 30% of the collections will be refreshed yearly...

I think I will only go back if there is something super attractive, interesting or weird.

2) The Lightnings

In certain areas, I found that it was either too dim or there are spotlight reflection on the masterpieces.

If you were to go through the photos in this post, you would be able to spot the white spots of the light reflection in them.

3) Quality of Art

They are all beautifully crafted, there is no denying in that. 

But I think some needs to be looked into..

Like the Michelle Jackson's masterpiece, considering that I am tall and this should be intended for general public.. following the instruction of how to pose for this~ It is nearly impossible if the feet needs to be at the allocated shadow spot and to support our own weight at that angle with slippery floor... This needs a lot of plank work.

The other collection I think needs to be looked into is the Camera Obscura exhibit. This needs a lot of maintenance, to not only ensure that there are sufficient materials to draw on (the marker was running out of ink too) but also... well.. it's cute that you have instructions inside the dark room... Mind having them outside instead? 

4) WiFi

I checked, the only free wifi available is Wireless@SG...

I was expecting something better, because its a hassle to connect to Wireless@SG and the connectivity isnt that great sometimes.

With that being said,

overall~ I still think Alive Museum is a place that should be experienced at least once!

With ticket prices at:

$25 for Adults

$20 for Children (3-12 years old)

FOC for Children under 3 years old

It is still pretty decent for 1.5 hours of fun!

I had lots of laughter and I did enjoy myself~!
